V F W VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS OF THE UNITED STATESJOHN VINCENT DANIELS, JR POST No. 2813
VFW Post 2813 John
V. Daniels Jr. & Ladies Auxiliary
In 1933, at the bottom of the Depression, a group of World War I veterans got together to organize a Veterans Post to help our Community.
After investigating many organizations, they decided that the aims of the VFW were closer to their beliefs than other organizations. A request was made to the National Office of the VFW for permission to organize a VFW Post. Permission was granted and on May 3, 1933, The John V. Daniels Post came into existence.
The Post was named “John V. Daniels Jr.,” in honor of a World War I soldier who was killed in action in France, in 1918, and whose parents resided in our Community. His parents were active in all patriotic and civic endeavors in our Community and they maintained these interest until their deaths.
The first meetings of the Post were held in rooms at the Monroe Community Court Club located at 43-13 47th Street, in Sunnyside. As the membership of Daniels Post expanded, it moved to its first own meeting rooms in a store, located on 39th Street, off Skillman Avenue.
In 1937, the Post moved again, to a store at 45-10 48th Avenue, where they had a basement for social affairs. It was in this building that the famous Daniels Band was organized. The band won many competitions throughout Queens and Long Island.
In 1940, the Post Moved into a store, at 45-09 45th Street, off Queens Boulevard. Unfortunately, they were not there too long because a serious fire destroyed all stores at 45th Street and Queens Boulevard. Everything the Post possessed was destroyed in that fire, including the Colors.
Within a short time, the Daniels Post bounced back and was again able to render services to veterans and their families.
During the years of World War II, the Daniels Post encountered some very tough times but the members managed to stick together.
Up until 1945, the Post membership was manly veterans of World War I. When GIs returned, after the second World War, our membership welcomed them into the Post and turned over the leadership to the younger members. Even though they encouraged the GIs, World War I men kept an active interest in things.
In 1951, the post purchased its first building, at 45-08 Skillman Avenue. It was a daring step but, within seven years, the building was paid for in full. This was accomplished by running social affairs and conducting Bingo Games.
In 1965, the Post purchased the half-block long property, at 41-20 Queens Boulevard., the new Post HQ. We built an entirely new building . it was one of the largest Post Rooms in the State of New York. All this was accomplished only because we were fortunate in having dedicated members.
The post sold the building at 41-20 Queens Boulevard in 1992 and moved to 43-16 Queens Boulevard. In June 2005 the Post moved to its present location at 51-27 Queens Boulevard, Woodside, NY 11377.
The Post helps to maintain, and holds its annual Memorial Day service at the Daniels Park, on 52n Street and Roosevelt Avenue.
